Denia - Situated in the north of the Costa Blanca region of Spain, about 45 km north of Alicante is the beautiful town of Denia. Famous for its castle and its fine sandy beaches, Denia is a popular holiday destination for thousands of tourists each year.

Denia is a town with a long and distinguished history which stretches back to the Roman occupation and beyond (htere were known ot be Greek and Iberian settlements in the area long before this). In the 3rd Century BC the Romans founded Dianium, the first real town, and some remains of this ancient settlement still exist today.

Denia castle dates back to the Arab occupation and was stared in the 11th Century - though it has been extended and re-fortified many times since. It now houses The Archaeological Museum which tells the history of Denia from those early times.

Modern day Denia is a magical place with plenty to see and do.Its 20 km of coastline is studded with sandy beaches, rocky coves and picturesque bays. Denia sits at the foot of the Montgó mountain and the surrounding countryside forms The Mount Montgó Natural Park (founded in 1987) a beautiful place to visit, walk and enjoy the scenery and wildlife, part of the park and also worth a visit is The Cape of San Santoni Nature Reserve.

Denia is a busy seaport and it has a daily fish market (La Lonja) where an area is provided for visitors to watch the bustling fish auctions. Denia is also a popular area for water sports and local conditions are ideal for surfing, sailing, jet-skiing and wind surfing, it is also a superb area for snorkeling and scuba diving.

A popular way to get to Denia is on the narrow gauge railway which runs from Denia to Alicante, calling at Benidorm on the way. Denia is a busy ferry port with regular trips to the Balearic islands such as Ibiza (just 55 miles away) and Mallorca.

Denia is a gourmet's paradise and its restaurants serve up some delicious local cuisine - one speciality being the Denia Red Prawn, considered by many to be one of the best tasting prawns in the world.
